Donuts in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, explained
They're what Hoopa eats to open a portal into Hyperspace Lumiose — and the flavor you bake into them decides what you get once you're inside.
Contents
Donuts are what Hoopa needs to eat before it will open a portal into Hyperspace Lumiose, the Mega Dimension DLC's wild-zone layer — no donut, no portal. Once you're inside, the same donut also drives your buffs for that run: how long you get to explore, and which bonuses (bigger encounter rates, better shiny odds, extra loot) are active while you're there.
Where they come from
You don't find finished donuts lying around — you bake them yourself, at Ansha's stand in Hotel Z's lobby, by picking Berries from what you're carrying. Early on you can only mix three berries into a batch; the cap rises to eight as you push through the Mega Dimension story and unlock better butter. Whatever berries go in decide everything about the donut that comes out — there's no separate "recipe" to learn, just the combination of berries on the table.
The five flavors
Every donut leans toward one dominant taste, and that taste is what determines its bonuses:
| Flavor | What it boosts |
|---|---|
| Sweet | Shiny and Alpha odds (Sparkling Power, Alpha Power), plus size-related powers |
| Spicy | Attack, Special Attack, Speed, and move power in battle |
| Sour | Item drops and haul size (Big Haul Power, Item Power) |
| Bitter | Defense, Special Defense, and damage resistance |
| Fresh | Encounter rate and catch-related bonuses |
A donut's flavor isn't a label you choose directly — it falls out of which berries you used and how much of each. Each berry pushes a donut's five internal taste values (sweet, spicy, sour, bitter, fresh) up by different amounts, and whichever value clears its threshold by the widest margin becomes the donut's dominant flavor. That's the same five numbers you'll see listed against each of the 203 donuts in our database — they're the minimum taste score a donut needs to land in that flavor, not a fixed recipe you have to hit exactly.
Choosing what to bake
Decide the flavor first, based on what you're about to do in Hyperspace Lumiose, then pick berries that push that one taste value up without wasting stock on the other four:
- Hunting shinies or Alphas — lean Sweet. Berries with a strong Sweet lean (Haban-type berries come up often in high-tier Sweet donuts) are what you want, and topping up quantity matters more than variety here.
- A tough battle or boss encounter inside a portal — lean Spicy for the stat bump, or Bitter if you expect to be tanking hits rather than dealing them.
- Farming materials — Sour donuts are the ones worth baking before a haul run, since they lift both drop chance and haul size together.
- Catching a specific target without fighting for every encounter — Fresh keeps Pokémon coming back faster and makes them easier to catch once they do.
Beyond the dominant flavor, a donut also gets a 1-to-5 star rating from its overall flavor score — the stronger the lean, the higher the stars, and you only start rolling the bonus "Flavor Powers" (the specific perks like Sparkling Power or Big Haul Power) once a donut reaches at least one star. A donut mixed from scattered, low-value berries across all five tastes can end up starless and functionally wasted, even if it technically has a dominant flavor.
What's actually worth baking
For most runs into Wild Zones, a small stack of high-Sweet donuts is the safest default — Alpha and Shiny odds are the bonuses you can't get any other way, and they stay useful whether you're deep-diving a portal or just passing through. Keep a few Sour donuts on hand for whenever you're specifically there to strip a zone for materials, and don't bother baking Bitter or Spicy unless you already know the portal ahead has a fight worth prepping for — both flavors are wasted on a run that's just exploration and catching.
