Valheim boss order, explained: which boss opens which biome
Seven bosses gate seven biomes, in a fixed sequence — Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, then Fader — and each one drops the specific material or key the next biome needs.
Contents
The order is fixed: Eikthyr → The Elder → Bonemass → Moder → Yagluth → The Queen → Fader, one boss per biome, Meadows through Ashlands. You can fight them out of order if you're stubborn enough to survive the biome early, but each boss drops the one item or key that makes the next biome workable, so skipping ahead just means grinding a biome without the tool it was designed around.
The sequence, biome by biome
| Boss | Biome | How to summon | Weak to | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eikthyr | Meadows | Two Deer Trophies at its altar (found via a Vegvisir) | Pierce (bow, spear); resists blunt and slash | Trophy grants a stamina-drain reduction power; opens the path into the Black Forest |
| The Elder | Black Forest | Three Ancient Seeds, burned in the offering bowl (seeds drop from Greydwarf brutes, shamans, and their nests) | Fire | The Swamp Key, without which Sunken Crypts — and the iron inside them — stay locked |
| Bonemass | Swamp | Ten Withered Bones placed at the skull altar (found in Sunken Crypts or Muddy Scrap Piles) | Blunt; resists poison | The Wishbone, which pings nearby silver ore through terrain — the Mountain's whole economy runs on that ore |
| Moder | Mountain | Three Dragon Eggs from drake nests, placed at her altar | Fire (poison also chips away at her); immune to frost | Dragon Tears for black metal crafting, plus a sailing tailwind power that makes the trip to the Plains bearable |
| Yagluth | Plains | Five Fuling Totems, looted from Fuling villages, set on the altar's pillars | Frost; resistant to nearly everything else | A trophy power that boosts most damage types — useful heading into Mistlands, where nearly everything bites back |
| The Queen | Mistlands | The Sealbreaker key (crafted from fragments) opens the Infested Citadel, where she's fought | Not reliably established across sources — see below | Eitr, the resource that unlocks magic staves and Mistlands crafting |
| Fader | Ashlands | Nine Bell Fragments, forged into three Bells and hung around the coliseum arena | Resists pierce; immune to fire and spirit — the specific offensive weakness is disputed (see below) | A Forsaken Power giving fire resistance, faster adrenaline gain, and reduced stagger |
Two things in that table are worth flagging rather than papering over. Sources disagree on The Queen's damage weakness — most guides talk about gearing up (Carapace, Eitr-woven armor) rather than naming a clean elemental weak point, so nothing specific is claimed here. And Fader's weakness is genuinely contested: one detailed source lists frost, lightning, slash and blunt as effective; another says he's weak to poison specifically, "the opposite of regular Charred enemies"; a third claims spirit damage — which directly contradicts the other two, since both agree he's immune to spirit. With three sources in three-way disagreement, the honest answer is: bring varied damage types and lean on what everyone does agree on — he resists pierce and shrugs off fire and spirit entirely, so don't build the fight around either.
Getting from boss to boss
The iron question — "where do I find iron" — has one answer: Iron Scrap only exists in the Swamp, inside Sunken Crypts (chests and Muddy Scrap Piles) and rarely loose underground. Crypts are sealed until you have the Swamp Key, which only drops from The Elder. That's the real reason Elder isn't optional: skip him and there's no iron, no iron gear, and no realistic Bonemass fight.
Each altar also needs to actually be found before you can use it — every boss site is marked by a Vegvisir, a glowing rune stone that draws a marker on your map once you interact with it. Vegvisirs are scattered through the relevant biome (and sometimes an earlier one, for Elder and Bonemass), so "I can't find the altar" is usually "I haven't found the Vegvisir yet," not a bug.
Where people get stuck
- Bonemass without blunt weapons. Slashing and piercing gear — the stuff you've been using since Eikthyr — does noticeably less here. A mace or a hammer, plus fire, turns an unwinnable slog into a normal fight.
- The jump into Mistlands. Yagluth's Plains gear is a hard floor, not a suggestion — Mistlands enemies punish anyone who arrives in early-game armor, and it's the point where a lot of runs stall out for weeks rather than days.
- Missing the Swamp Key altogether. New players sometimes find a Sunken Crypt before beating The Elder, can't open it, and assume the crypt itself is bugged or empty. It isn't — it's locked behind a boss you haven't fought yet.
Taming your own supply lines helps here too: a home base stocked from tamed animals means you're not re-foraging food for every boss attempt, which matters most for the multi-try fights like Moder and Fader.
What changes with 1.0
Valheim's 1.0 update, due September 9, 2026, adds an eighth biome, the Deep North, and according to the official FAQ the update "focuses on" that biome specifically. Beyond that, the details are thin: developer devlogs have been framing Deep North content through a narrative device called "the Voyage of Hervor Bloodtooth," but that name refers to a story character in those teaser posts, not a confirmed boss — so treat any claim of a named eighth boss as unverified until 1.0 actually ships. In the current version, Fader in the Ashlands remains the final fight, and the seven-boss order above is complete.
