You need one Larval Tear per respec. They're a consumable item dropped mostly by Silver Tears in Nokron and Nokstella, and the base game hands out 18 of them across a single playthrough — so 18 is the ceiling on how many times you can rebirth before starting New Game Plus, which refills the supply. The tear is spent the moment you confirm Rebirth; you don't get it back.
What Rebirth can't touch is your starting class. Rebirth doesn't reset your level or your equipment — only where your points are allocated — and it can't push any stat below the floor your original class started with. Pick Vagabond and your Strength and Vigor will always have a higher minimum than a Prisoner's, no matter how many tears you spend rebalancing everything else.
Your face and build are a separate system entirely. The Clouded Mirror Stand, in Fia's chamber at Roundtable Hold, changes your character's appearance as many times as you like, for free — it's unrelated to Rennala, unrelated to Larval Tears, and doesn't require beating any boss beyond reaching Roundtable Hold in the first place.
