Diamond ore is most common at Y=-58 and Y=-59, in the deepslate layer, on both Java and Bedrock. If you're still digging down to Y=11, you're following advice that stopped being true when the Caves & Cliffs update rewrote how the world generates below ground.
Before Caves & Cliffs, the world bottomed out at Y=0 and diamonds were densest around Y=11-12 — that number is still everywhere online because it was correct for years. Since the update, the world extends down to Y=-64, ores were redistributed across the new depth, and diamond ore now generates on a triangular curve that peaks statistically at Y=-64, the very bottom of the world, and tapers off above Y=16.
In practice nobody mines at the mathematical peak, because the bottom few layers (roughly Y=-63 to -55) are riddled with an underground lava ocean that world generation fills in automatically — a lot of that "peak" ore sits in blocks you can't safely reach without pumping out lava first. That's why both the wiki and independent guides converge on Y=-58/-59 as the practical sweet spot: still deep enough to be near the top of the curve, shallow enough to mostly clear the lava layer.
Branch mining means digging down to -59, then carving parallel tunnels off a main corridor, spaced so their exposed walls cover the stone between them without leaving gaps — a spacing of about two blocks between branches is the common recommendation, since diamond ore veins are small and irregular. It's slow but methodical: you will hit every vein in range, at the cost of breaking a lot of plain stone and deepslate along the way.
Cave and dripstone exploration is faster when it works: descending through natural caverns exposes ore veins other players have already found for you, without the tool wear of branch mining. It's also riskier — mobs, drops, and lava are all closer to you at these depths, and disorientation in a cave is a real way to die with a full inventory. Bring the items that make the depths survivable — a decent set of armor, food, torches or another light source — before dropping in.
Diamond ore requires an iron pickaxe or better; a stone or wooden pickaxe breaks it for nothing. Mining it bare-handed drops nothing at all. A single block of diamond ore drops one diamond, or more with a Fortune-enchanted pickaxe; Silk Touch drops the ore block itself instead. None of the enchantments that matter here are exotic — Fortune III on your pickaxe roughly doubles your average yield per block over an unenchanted one.
The depths where diamond is common are also where the lava ocean lives. The standard precaution is to carry water — a bucket or two — so you can douse lava the moment you break into it, or pour it ahead of you before opening a large cavity. Water turns flowing lava into obsidian or cobblestone on contact, which is far cheaper than losing your inventory. Dig carefully near unexplored air pockets at this depth: an opening that looks like a small cave can be sitting right next to a lake you haven't seen yet.
You don't have to mine for every diamond. Shipwreck treasure chests and buried treasure chests (found with a buried treasure map) both include diamonds in their loot tables — buried treasure is the better bet of the two, turning up a diamond in roughly half of chests opened, against a much smaller chance per shipwreck chest. Neither is a reliable primary source, but if you're already exploring the coastline for a treasure map, it's diamonds you don't have to dig for.
Diamonds aren't the last stop — a diamond pickaxe is what lets you mine ancient debris, the ore netherite comes from, and it lives in the Nether rather than the overworld. On average, Y=16 turns up the most debris, though it also generates in smaller pockets much deeper and much shallower, in blobs that don't reveal themselves by texture the way overworld ores do — which is why most players scan for it with TNT rather than a pickaxe. Once you have debris, smelting it in a furnace or blast furnace yields netherite scrap, and four scraps combined with four gold ingots at a crafting table make one netherite ingot.
