Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program Launches for All Players
Converted titles gain PC cross-play and cloud access, but players risk losing digital licenses if they part with the physical disc.
All Xbox Series X and Xbox One users can now convert physical games into digital licenses, as the Xbox Disc-to-Digital program expanded worldwide on September 30, 2026. Inserting an eligible physical disc into a console adds an associated digital license to the account while leaving the original disc intact and operational.
Claiming a license requires inserting a supported disc while signed in to an Xbox profile. Players can also claim Xbox Series X licenses using an Xbox One disc drive. To speed up claiming multiple titles, users can open the console settings, go to Devices & connections, select Disc, and uncheck "Play disc automatically" to prevent games from initiating full disc installations during the registration process.
Converted titles include standard digital ecosystem features, such as Xbox Play Anywhere cross-play on PC and access through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Third-party publisher support varies across the library: thousands of games from publishers including Ubisoft and Sega are eligible, while others, such as Square Enix, do not yet support the program across their entire lineup.
Microsoft's official support documentation states that players must retain physical possession of the original game disc. Selling, trading, or losing the qualifying disc can result in the digital license being restricted or revoked. Additionally, players intending to access converted libraries via streaming face upcoming restrictions, as Xbox Cloud Gaming will implement hourly playtime limits beginning in November 2026.
