The Silksong boss order that actually matters
Only seven bosses stand between you and the credits. Here's which ones are mandatory, what each hands you, and where the optional fights actually pay off.
Only seven bosses stand between you and the credits. Here's which ones are mandatory, what each hands you, and where the optional fights actually pay off.
Silksong has more than forty bosses, but the game only forces you through seven of them: Moss Mother, Bell Beast, Lace, Fourth Chorus, Sister Splinter and Widow in Act 1, then Last Judge to close it out and open Act 2. Every other fight — and there are dozens — is a detour you choose to take because the reward is worth the risk, not because the story stops without it. This page is that route: what's required, what order it comes in, and what each mandatory fight actually gives you. For the full roster, stats and locations of everything else, the bosses database has all 44 entries.
Act 1 is the only part of Silksong that's genuinely linear about its bosses — miss the fight and you're stuck, because each one hands you the tool that opens the next area.
| Boss | Area | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Moss Mother | Moss Grotto | Passage onward into Bone Bottom — no ability attached |
| Bell Beast | The Marrow | A Silk Heart, and the Bellway fast-travel network |
| Lace | Deep Docks | The route into Far Fields (no new ability from the fight itself) |
| Fourth Chorus | Far Fields | Progress back through Far Fields toward the Citadel — again, no item |
| Sister Splinter | Shellwood | Cling Grip, the wall-jump you need for most of the rest of the game |
| Widow | Bellhart | Needolin, which lifts the silk curse on the town and opens Weaver Doors everywhere |
| Last Judge | Blasted Steps | The Grand Gate into the Citadel — Act 2 |
Two things worth flagging because they trip people up. First, Swift Step isn't a reward for beating Lace — you pick it up from a Weaver Burial Spire before the fight, because you need it to reach her arena in the first place; Lace herself only opens the road ahead. Second, Sister Splinter comes before Widow, not after — if you're wondering where to go after the Widow fight, the answer is Bellhart is done, and Shellwood's Sister Splinter should already be behind you.
Everything else in Act 1 — Moorwing, Savage Beastfly, the Skull Tyrant, Phantom in the Exhaust Organ — is optional. They're worth fighting for specific payoffs: Savage Beastfly drops a Beast Crest, for instance, and several others gate tools you'll otherwise go without. None of them block progress if you skip them.
Last Judge doesn't just open a gate — it drops you into the Citadel of Song, a map roughly twice the size of Act 1's, and the mandatory boss count actually shrinks. You only need to beat two more fights to see the credits:
That's it for the required path. Everything else in the Citadel — Trobbio, the Second Sentinel, First Sinner, Father of the Flame, Broodmother, and a dozen more — is there because the rewards are good, not because you're blocked without them. A few are worth calling out by name: Second Sentinel guards the Reserve Bind tool, Father of the Flame drops the Wispfire Lantern, and First Sinner is the fight that teaches Rune Rage. If you want the abilities themselves cross-referenced against what unlocks them, the abilities database has the full list, and the quests database covers the wishes some of these fights are tied to.
This is the part people search for the most, and it isn't a boss fight at all — it's a checklist. Act 3 doesn't unlock just by beating Grand Mother Silk normally. You need, before or alongside that fight:
Do all of that, sit through the credits, and reload your save — Act 3 starts from there.
Act 3 flips the structure again: three mandatory bosses guard three "Old Hearts," and unlike Act 1, you can take them in any order. They are:
Most players who've cleared all three rate Nyleth as the easiest of the trio and Karmelita as the hardest, for whatever that's worth going in. Collect the three hearts and the path opens to Lost Lace, the game's true final boss — an escalated rematch that's meaningfully harder than anything before it, so don't treat it as a formality.
As in the earlier acts, Act 3 also scatters optional fights around its map — Voltvyrm, Pinstress, Tormented Trobbio and others — each tied to a specific tool or memento rather than to progress. If a name in this guide doesn't ring a bell, it's almost certainly one of those side fights, and it's sitting in the bosses database with its location and drop listed.
